We’re excited to announce that the Spartan Scholars is back and has been reimagined for the digital age. The Spartan Scholars takes the intensive, individualized instruction that has made past attendees fall in love with the SDI to offer our longest session hosted by MSU yet.

Why Choose the Spartan Scholars?

Flexible Schedule --- The online instruction allow students to more easily fit debate camp into their busy summer schedules.

Affordable --- The per week cost of the camp is significantly more affordable than traditional brick and mortar camps. Students receive over six weeks of instruction priced as low as $2700

Students who apply before April 5th receive an early application discount of $200 for a total tuition of $2700. Students who apply after the early application deadline will have a tuition of $2900.

Strong Faculty --- Students will work with some of the finest high school and college coaches in the country including Bill Batterman, coach at Woodward Academy, Maggie Berthiaume, coach at Woodward Academy, Will Repko, three-time NDT winning coach at Michigan State.

The online platform will also allow students to work remotely with a wide array of current and former debate professionals. Students at the 2020 SDI received online instruction and feedback from many former debaters now in the professional space and topic experts. You can see a partial list here.

Individualized Curriculum --- Many workshops have moved labs toward a heavy research focus and away from targeted instruction. The online weeks allow students to move at their own pace with personalized feedback from instructors. The best way to prepare against advanced strategy is to repeatedly simulate debating them and students in the Spartan Scholars will doing speaking activities daily.

Rigorous Instruction --- The SDI prides itself on pushing students to develop the tools necessary to work hard at the institute and after. From “After Lab” (optional lectures from the close of lab until bed-check), to targeted flowing practice, to high expectation from instructors in lab, students have the opportunity to get the most out of their time participating in the camp.

*Price: as low as $2700 (deposits by April 5th)

$2900 if deposit paid after April 6th

Spartan Scholars FAQs

  • What is the typical schedule for the days online?

Students will have approximately 5 hours of instruction on any day online done at their own pace. It will generally involve a lecture, activity or research task, speaking drill, and an electronically submitted speech. You can find a sample online instruction day here.

  • What technological platforms will you be using?
In the summer of 2020, the SDI was the first camp to announce it would be going fully online and using our university learning management system - D2L. We anticipate using D2L, Zoom, and Google at the SDI this summer.

The SDI gives students the opportunity to grow as debaters and as students through close relationships with lab leaders, lectures, and fun field trips. My experience at SDI stood out in comparison to other camps because the lab leaders and students wanted me to succeed.
