MSU Debate Finishes Busy Weekend in Top Four

MSU Debate had four teams debating across two tournaments last weekend and finished in the Final Four at the Crowe Warken Debates.

Arielle Gearring, a Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy senior, and Hina Shehzad, an International Relations junior reached the Final Four at the Crowe Warken Debates hosted by the US Naval Academy. Hina Shehzad (left) and Arielle Gearring outside on a sunny day

Gearring and Shehzad defeated teams from the University of Michigan, George Mason University, New York University, James Madison University, Binghampton University, and Emory University in their eight preliminary rounds at the tournament.

Based on their performance, Gearring was named the tournament’s third overall speaker and Shehzad was fifth. Gearring and Shehzad entered elimination rounds as the fourth seed.

Glen Scully, a computer science senior, and Zaria Jarman, a Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy junior, reached the quarterfinals (Elite Eight) after wins over the University of Georgia, the University of Michigan, Georgetown University, and George Mason University. Scully was ninth speaker and Jarman was 13th.

Henry Martin, a physics and philosophy first-year student in the Honors College, and Isabella Foster, a philosophy and film first-year student in the Honors College reached the octafinals (Sweet Sixteen) after winning seven of eight preliminary debates. Martin was eighth speaker and Foster was tenth.

“The team had a great showing at the Navy tournament,” said Will Repko, MSU Debate Head Coach. “We had lots of students receiving speaker awards and all three teams were in elimination debates, so they have a lot to be proud of.”

While those three teams were debating at the Crowe Warken Debates, Joanna Gusis, a Statistics and Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy senior in the Honors College, and Stephen Lewis, a Social Relations and Policy junior, were debating at the Herbert L. James Debates in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The Herbert L. James Debates are an invitation-only tournament hosted by Dartmouth College for seven of the top teams in the country in a round-robin format.

In a round-robin format MSU debates each invited team once. The other teams invited were the University of Michigan, Emory University, the University of Kansas, Dartmouth College, Northwestern University, and Georgetown University. This is the first time that MSU has been invited to the Herbert L. James Debates since 2016

“Being invited to Dartmouth is an honor and a huge milestone for the program,” said Repko. “Joanna and Stephen have been having an incredible year and it’s great to have their success recognized.”

The MSU Debate team is part of the Honors College.
