MSU Debate Team Invited to Elite Round Robin

Nate Glancy and David Koster, members of the Michigan State University Debate Team, were invited to attend the Brick City Round Robin – an elite event in which only twelve teams are selected to participate.

Glancy is an economics senior originally from Chicago, Illinois and David Koster is a political science sophomore in the Honors College originally from Wichita, Kansas.

Nate Glancy and David KosterAt the tournament, Glancy and Koster will compete against teams from all over the country including Dartmouth College, Emory University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota.

This will be MSU Debate’s first appearance at the Brick City Round Robin hosted by Rutgers University-Newark.

“An invitation to the round robin tournament is a tremendous honor,” said Will Repko, the MSU Debate Team Head Coach. “With only twelve teams participating, it recognizes what a successful season Nate and David have had so far.”

Glancy and Koster have reached elimination debates at every tournament they’ve attended so far this year. They were in the quarterfinals of the Georgetown-Fullerton Tournament, the octafinals of the Wake Forest Tournament, the double octafinals of the University of Kentucky Tournament, and triple octafinals of the Northwestern Tournament.

“Nate and David have improved on their results at every tournament they’ve attended so far,” Repko said. “This tournament will certainly be challenging – many of the best teams in the country will be there – but we’re keeping our momentum going by preparing the best we can.”

Preparation for the tournament will span the next several weeks and include other students on the team and the coaching staff.

“While Nate and David will be the students representing us at the tournament, their invitation is a reflection of the full team’s effort,” said Carly Watson, MSU Debate Director. “We really believe in philosophy that you win or lose as a team so we’ll be working as a team to prepare.”

The Brick City Round Robin will be hosted online by Rutgers University-Newark January 21-23, 2022.

The MSU Debate team is part of the Honors College.
