MSU Debate had two teams in elimination debates at the Georgetown Tournament with one team finishing in the top sixteen.
Joanna Gusis, a Statistics and Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy senior in the Honors College, and Stephen Lewis, a Social Relations and Policy junior, reached the Sweet Sixteen after a weekend of debates.
Gusis and Lewis won five of their eight preliminary debates with wins over Northwestern University, the University of California Berkeley, Wake Forest University, the University of Kansas, and the University of Georgia.
Isabella Foster, a philosophy and film first year in the Honors College, and Henry Martin, a physics and philosophy first year in the Honors College, reached elimination debates after defeating teams from Northwestern University, Missouri State University, the University of Michigan, and California State University Long Beach.
After preliminary debates, teams were seeded into a single-elimination bracket based on their wins in preliminary debates and overall speaker points.
In elimination debates, Gusis and Lewis defeated a team from Binghampton University before being narrowly bested by a team from the University of Kansas. Foster and Martin exited in the first elimination debate after a narrow loss to a team from Northwestern University.
“It was a great weekend for MSU Debate with two teams in elimination debates,” said Will Repko, MSU Debate Head Coach. “It’s always a little tricky to be ready to debate over winter break but we felt like we were prepared and debating well.”
Earlier this season, Gusis and Lewis were in the Final Four at tournaments hosted by Wake Forest University and the University of Kentucky. Martin and Foster reached the Final Four at a tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.
MSU was also represented at the tournament by Arielle Gearring, a Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy senior, Hina Shehzad, an International Relations junior, Glen Scully, a computer science senior, and Zaria Jarman, a Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy junior.
